ERRATIC WEATHER by MAOTIK x Maarten Vos
In 2019, Mathieu Le Sourd (MAOTIK) graced our campus as one of the first participants in our inaugural Artist in Residence program, hosted with Sónar+D. This weekend (3th & 4th October) his immersive piece, created in collaboration with Maarten Vos, will be on show.
Despite the skepticism of some world leaders, climate change is a reality and the world isn’t just warming, and in some parts of the planet we’re witnessing increasingly erratic weather patterns. Our generation has started to observe the effects and consequences of this shift, witnessing violent and unexpected climate phenomenons.
Erratic Weather is a digital art project aiming to represent changing atmospheric conditions in an immersive multimedia experience. During the performance, the system uses various sources of weather information retrieved from an online database and processed in real-time to generate a visual and a surround sound composition.
In the first 30 minutes, the audience will experience the life cycle of swirling phenomenons such as typhoons, hurricanes, and tropical cyclones, demonstrating the devastating power of nature and the emergency to preserve it.
MONOM Presents: ERRATIC WEATHER LIVE PREMIERE IN 4DSOUND & LOST SPACE: RAINFORESTS by William Russell | Saturday, 3rd October | Click here for tickets.
ERRATIC WEATHER (60m)
Erratic Weather is a digital art project by French digital artist Mathieu Le Sourd (@maotik_) and Dutch cellist composer and producer Maarten Vos (@maartenvos_) aiming to represent changing atmospheric conditions in an immersive multimedia experience. During the performance, the system uses various sources of weather information retrieved from an online database and processed in realtime to generate a visual and a surround sound composition. The audience will experience the life cycle of swirling phenomenons such as typhoon, hurricanes, and tropical cyclones, demonstrating the devastating power of nature and the emergency to preserve it.
LOST SPACE: RAINFORESTS (30m)
On a weekend dedicated to the power of nature, we are also pleased to re-present “Lost Space: Rainforests” by MONOM’s Creative Director, William Russell. “Lost Space: Rainforests” is a Sonic Film created for MONOM’s original framework “Sonic Cinema”.
An enchanting, haunting, and at moments terrifying composition of sound, music, and voice, ‘Lost Space – Rainforests’ is divided into stages based on falling in and out of synchronization with nature.
The audience will be taken on a journey connecting human emotions to the dynamics of natural phenomena immersing the listener in the rich sonic environments of rainforests from around the world – home to more species than any other environment, spaces and life that we have lost forever, and ones that are on the brink of destruction.
MONOM STUDIO
MONOM is an artist-run cultural centre and sound laboratory. The space is powered by 4DSOUND technology, an instrument and sound system that immerses listeners inside 48 omnidirectional speakers suspended throughout the venue and extending to 9 powerful subs submerged beneath an acoustically transparent floor. MONOM is an experimental performance venue and state of the art spatial sound studio that explores how spatial sound technologies and practices can contribute to increased opportunities for artistic experimentation and collaboration across disciplines. At MONOM the audience is enveloped completely within the artwork, enticed as active listeners to explore a shifting sonic landscape made up of dynamic sound arrangements that play with the laws of perception, and entirely subvert them.
